The U-Joint was more worn and loose than I've ever seen one
The long steering shaft was bent and worn badly and gets cut off
But the unique early steering wheel needs to be saved, seen here in the lathe
It is blasted clean, primed and painted
With the transmission removed I can find out what was knocking in second gear
Before disassembly I could see a tooth broken off on second gear
The tooth was laying in the bottom of the case
Along with a broken corner of the original shift tower, if this broke the tooth there are no marks
It is easier to see with the lower gear cluster removed
And easier yet from this angle
The shaft for the lower cluster has a fair amount of wear as did the front bearing
I had a good cluster and shaft from a parts tractor and a NOS roller bearing from a sealed original box
The transmission is ready again, but there is still a lot to take apart to clean and inspect
Oil had leaked into the brake area which kept things from rusting, and they came out easily
There was a removable gear on the pinion shaft until WC86404 in 1939
The right side had pieces of the spring washer in the bottom of the final drive housing
I was able to get a nice used one so there is a good one on each pinion shaft
Seen from the side view
This is where they go, and with a new key they should be tight enough for the work it is likely to see
Both sides were filled with old goo, the right side also had 3 remnants of attempts at brake springs
Lots of old goo in here, cleaned now as well as I could reach
This is all that's left in the place where the tractor was rolled into the shop
